▼ Poseidon Model 1/72 Scale RG Crossbone Gundam X-1 Review

Having spent some time completing this 1/72 scale (upscaled) RG Crossbone Gundam X-1 kit from Poseidon Model, I wasn’t particularly eager to write extensively about it. However, as a review, some commentary is necessary, so let’s dive straight in.

▼ Runners / Parts Quality

From my perspective, the runners are not outstanding, but certainly not bad, ranking slightly above average among domestic models. The exterior armor details look good, but some parts of the inner frame appear a bit soft due to a slightly oily finish. Fortunately, these are mostly internal components and not externally visible. The included decals indicate parts for X1-3, suggesting that various recolors and equipment variations are likely to follow.

▼ Assembly Experience

The overall assembly experience was quite good. Due to the upscaled design, joints and load-bearing components from the original smaller scale have been enlarged and strengthened, resulting in a very sturdy build with appropriate tightness. Most parts fit comfortably without excessive force, with only one or two areas being slightly tighter. The classic Crossbone emblem is well-executed without issues. The skull detail on the head is particularly well-rendered, with specific color-correction decals provided for the eye sockets. The water decals are of good quality, self-adhesive, flexible, and of suitable thickness, with minimal white edges, adhering closely to the printed design.

▼ Design Philosophy (Upscaling & Optimizations)

The manufacturer didn't simply mindlessly upscale the kit; instead, targeted optimizations and modifications were made throughout the process, as demonstrated in this review. Many aspects, including articulation, structure, and color separation, differ significantly from the original version. Regardless of personal preference for these changes, the approach is certainly commendable, as it enhances the product while addressing some shortcomings of the original. This, of course, is also thanks to the increased modification space afforded by the larger scale.

▼ Accessories

Accessories are largely complete, with nothing omitted from the original version, and playability remains consistent. However, the beam saber blades still suffer from the common issue of air bubbles, slightly affecting their appearance. Fortunately, these two beam sabers are not frequently used, and other common accessories are problem-free, making it a minor fortunate drawback.

▼ Scale Discussion

Due to the original RG's mobile suit design, it was inherently a small machine, and combined with its smaller scale, the overall height was only about 10cm (famously palm-sized). Upscaled by the manufacturer to 1/72 scale, the overall height now reaches over 20cm, making it significantly larger. However, scale debates have long been contentious, so personal preference is key, and I will not comment further on that aspect.

▼ Final Thoughts

From the product's overall performance, the quality is quite good; while not exceptional, it certainly surpasses expectations. Furthermore, with so many optimizations made possible by the upscaling, it's definitely a viable option for those who prefer larger scales. However, it might be a disappointment for scale purists.
